Do I have to use a Scorpion supplied Opto cable when using the Spirit Governor?
Or just connect the ESC Rpm output to the Spirit directly?

Just to be sure before connecting up....
Will the Spirit's Governor input work OK with just the output from the esc's RPM output connected with a standard cable?
Any information please?

Hello,

yes, you will need the Opto cable. At the output you will need only white wire which carry the RPM signal.
This wire should be inserted in the middle position of the servo connector.

Many thanks
So just the signal wire only (looks to be yellow) and + and - are just isolated from anything at all?

You will need to connect black(brown) and red wires to a power supply (BEC) as the ESC has no BEC.

If you are using HV BEC voltage I also recommend to use a small mod. It is quite same as for the VBar.
Please see my scheme. This will make reading more stable and also more safe.

I'm using a 14S 160hv SBEC version with the Spirit,as below.

http://www.scorpionsystem.com/catalog/s ... _sbec_esc/

Wired different with this?

It depends on, if the ESC is outputting a BEC voltage also at the RPM Signal Output port.
If so, then it can feed the Opto cable and you do not have to connect power from the other side.
Thus you will only need to connect Signal wire directly to the unit.

You can measure it with a multimeter. If there is a voltage between red/brown wires.

The ESC has been powered up for the first time and voltage measurements taken at the RPM output signal port and at the end of the Scorpion OPTO cable.

4.6v is present when measured directly at the plug coming out of the ESC across the + & - (red and black) but nothing at all on the + & - end of the OPTO cable.

So absolutely no conditions can be detected at the OPTO cable end.

Does this sound right? Is the 4.6v just being used to power up the OPTO cable from the ESC and then not pass through the device?

Just found this on Runryder posted some time back by Scorpion owner George Vanganse:

"opto cable is like an extension cable but with opto isolator chip build in, so it will eliminate possible grounding issue when a system is using different voltage, or eliminate possible signal interferences.
it need to be powered by both side of the cable for it to work.
Hyperion phase sensor is to detect phase change of a PMBLDC Motor, and generate a signal to the receipting unit.
so they are not the same.
Scorpion Opto cable are used to transmit the signal of the build in Phase output of the Scorpion ESC to external governor, such as V stabi or other governor, but isolating the voltage coming from the ESC so when external governor unit has a lower operating voltage on the sensor port, ( V stabi is 3.3V) to avoid grounding issues.
you use Hyperion Phase sensor on the motor cable to get the phase signal if your ESC do not have an phase output port. such as hobby wing and CC esc."

Seems that this cable needs the 4.6v coming from the ESC and also a power supply from the Spirit unit.

Any issues here that you can see?
The Spirit and electronics will all be running at 7.2v as set on the ESC's SBEC.
