I have somemore info on this problem. I had the failure again. I had plugged the spirit unit in, got the solid light on the unit. The lights on both sats were solid. I did not get the arm signal and once again there is no response from the tx sticks. So I went into the log and it said everything was fine. Good health. I picked up the heli and the servos responded in trying to correct the movement. The next thing I did was I turned off the tx but left the spirit unit powered up. The lights on both sats went out. I went into the log and it "did not" log the signal loss. I did this a few times and each time it "did not" log the signal loss and still no response from the tx sticks. Next I powered down the spirit unit leaving the tx on, powered it backup and now everything is working ok. So for one more test I turned the tx off and went into the log and this time it logged the the signal loss. So there has got to be something wrong with this spirit unit. If you would please PM me and let me know were to go from here.

According to your description everything is correct with the unit.
The unit does not log signal lost, if the signal was not recognized. So you can't log something, that is not visible for some reason.
Once there is signal at least for one time (seen by unit), then it will show signal lost event.

So if it started working just by replugging the power, then the problem can't be in unit's electronic (if so, then it will not work).
This kind of problem is really caused in the most cases by BEC.

But to exclude the unit, the easiest would be if you have second one. So you can check if it is happening too.

We can of course examine the unit, but I want to save your money (we can try all possible things first).

Let me ask another question. How low would the voltage need to be before the light on the sat would go out? When you get brown outs does the light also go out? Just trying to understand how this works.

With DSM2 satellites brownouts can be recognized by blinking LED. With DSMX it is unfortunately not easily possible because of changed design.

I just had the problem again. This time I was monitoring the bec voltage right at the spirit unit. I had 5.8 volts. So does not look like a bec problem. I then disconnected the sat and plugged another cable in to check the voltage to the sat. I saw 3.25 volts, that was across the black and orange wires. I then reconnected the sat and it started working again. I will try to come up with a way to check the voltage without having to unhook it.

Voltage will be most probably OK.
The problem that I am describing is only at the moment when you are connecting the battery. If this is the case, then it can be fixed by one cheap capacitor that costs around $0.5

Can you tell me what ESC/BEC and servos do you use?

One other thing when I disconnected the sat this last time I did not power the unit off. I hooked the other cable up to check power and then re hooked the sat without powering it down and it came back to life as soon as I hooked the sat back up.

Talon BEC is really enough and the ESC is actually used for 550 size helicopters.
But we know some cases with similar problem and different units that are using Castle ESC/BECs.

I believe that adding mentioned capacitor can solve the problem. Also it shouldn't happen with standard Spektrum receiver as a small capacitor is already integrated there. All in all, this problem can cause only issues during startup, not during flight.
Was there any other problem during flight (for example after few minutes)?
