Hi, is it needed for Rescue (and/or Self level) to work properly that the FBL is initialized (powered on for a flight) on a leveled surface?

No, it is not needed, altough it is recommended.

You can start helicopter even in 30° inclination, but to be sure that the rescue/stabilisation will be precise from the beginning of the flight, you can leave helicopter for few seconds at the level (+/- 5°) surface.
Alternatively if you have no levelled surface, you can hover for few seconds and all will be OK.

Doesn't this mean level is changing throughout flight? I'm convinced that this is part of the reason for my rescue angle issue with 1.2. 1.1 works better for me.

I also don't understand how it works... does it recalibrate when he sees no cyclic input? Or what? There can be situations where the heli is not level also without no cyclic, like when doing FF and then letting go... the heli will still be tilted...

Unfortunately we can't disclose how the bailout work, but we are working on it for many years to make it perfect for any flight style.
You can use it as beginner or 3D pilot as well.
