Today I flew my (trusty) Goblin 770 Sport and immediately noticed the RPM on spool-up and take-off kept climbing through the governed rpm to a maximum of about 2100rpm. The target rpm was 1500. In the hover I tried all 3 idle-up (Flight modes) but no change - the Spirit governor wasn't responding. I shut it down and the flight log confirmed a few lines with 'rpm sensor noisy' (or similar words)

Back on the bench with blades off the governed rpms tested ok. I looked at the rpm sensor test in Spirit Settings and while it shows the correct rpm when running, the 'indicator' for the sensor flickers intermittently, confirming the 'noisy' issue. I've attached a screenshot capturing one of the moments when the sensor is inactive but the rpm is showing a realistic figure (should be 1500). This is new to me, never happened before with this heli, so before I start stripping-out parts I'm hoping for some advice as to where to look / what the issue might be, please.

Setup: Goblin 770 Sport - (quite new, around 15-20 flights total, never crashed), 12S power. Castle Creations Phoenix Edge HV 120 ESC with Spirit Telem-CC cable in throttle-lead to Spirit RS, which is configured as-per Spirit manual along with the ESC to provide telemetry. Since the RPM telemetry is included with the throttle signal instead of a single-wire to the rpm sense-pin on the Spirit, I've no idea how to diagnose where the fault lies. There's no obvious signs of wire or connector damage and if there was, I'd think the throttle signal would be intermittent, which it isn't.

I've attached a screenshot of the relevant Governor settings page if it helps. Please note that early-on, I switched to the Spirit governor from the Castle governor because despite altering the ESC's settings, the initial spool-up included a big tail-kick which would rotate the heli about 90 degrees on the pad before take-off (!). This is why the 'spoolup rate' is set to 'slow'.

Any ideas, please? Many thanks,

Andy

Hi
Have you check the governor box in all banks?
In esc you have to set RPM out(the white cable)whiths goes to rpm pin on unit.
The telemetry rpm value is not suitable for control of governor.

Thanks, Latjo, you're right, I'm an idiot! The separate white wire does indeed connect to the RPM pin on the Spirit RS. I was confused because the required-for-telemetry TELEM-CC adapter goes inline with the throttle cable to the fbl unit.

And yes, after checking the governor settings are the same for all banks.

I still can't understand why the Spirit unit sees such 'noise' on the rpm input. When I spool-up the heli on the bench the governor cuts-in and operates most times, but occasionally, I assume due to the 'intermittent/noisy' rpm feed, the governor doesn't 'latch' and the head will spin-up to over 2000 rpm, presumably the max headspeed for the setup / battery. In my limited experience of 'noise' pickup on wiring, I'd think of separating the white wire from the throttle-cable, but as its included in the flat molding of 4 wires (+/-, signal, RPM wire) I doubt if that will help. I've also double-checked the settings via Castle-link: the ESC is configured to 'Link Live Enables' and 'Auxiliary Wire Mode' set to 'RPM Out'.

Cheers, Andy

Thanks for replies.

I just looked at the same 'rpm sensor test' page in spirit settings with my Trex 700X (Align/Hobbywing ESC / Spirit RS) and the sensor indicator is also showing intermittent when the motor spools-up. Clearly, this is a 'feature, not a bug' because the rpm sensor does read pulses. I expected the software to integrate the pulses over a short period to show if the sensor is working or not. Bit like the guy who asks his wife if his car indicators are working; she watches and says: "Yes they're working, No, they're not...."

Anyhow, I still don't understand how to fix a 'noisy' rpm sensor (integrated to the CC ESC), as reported from the after-flight log.

Cheers, Andy

Hi
Look at the numbers in governor page,if you have 1900 rpm in setpoint and the real value rpm
varies ca +-100 rpm thats ok.
I have also noisy rpm signal in log,but dont care mutch abaut it the governor works fine.
You can allso check the log in Jeti TX after flight.
And dont set governor respons to high, you can get tailwag in fast forward flight.
