Hi everyone!

I bought a Spirit Pro + Geolink set for my Trex 450L 6S. I mange to do the basic flight settings and the heli is flyable. I am a beginner. So, still I am doing the hovering and slight forward and backwards flying.

I would like to advance into using the governor feature. However, I have no prior experience with governor programming or usage. I had followed the spirit instructions and one of the Spirit member's instructions here and prepare the basic governor setup. However, there are some points that I do not understand or have doubts and requesting your further advice.

My hardware is:

Heli: Trex 450L Dominator 6S
ESC: CC EDGE 50 AMP, BEC set to 5.5V, aux line set to RPM output, SW: V4.25
Battery: 6S Li-Po, 22.2V 1200mA
FBL: Spirit Pro
Radio: Futaba 10J with R3008SB receiver connected with S-Bus

1. ESC setup
Throttle - Vehicle type = External gover, Throttle type = Fixed Endpoints, Initial spool-up rate = Medium (5), Head speed change rate = Low (2), Auto-rotation = Enable
Motor - motor start power = Low (39), Motor timing = Normal (5)
Other - Auxiliary wire mode = RPM out

2. Setting on Spirit Pro FBL
Throttle frequency = 60Hz, Throttle range Min = 1000 Mic/s, Throttle range Max = 1940 Mic/s, Max head speed = 3000 RPM, Remaining settings are left as Spirit default values.

3. Setting on 10J radio
Throttle curve - P1= 0.0%, P2 = 40.0%, P3 = 70.0%, P4 = 85.0%, P5 = 100.0%
Pitch curve - P1= -22%, P2 = +11%, P3 = +55%, P4 = +78%, P5 = +100%

I would like to know:

1.In the Spirit manual 3.1 Castle ESC If Castle ESC is used, please configure following Throttle parameters in the General - Throttle/Governor window: Throttle Frequency: 60Hz.

In the Governor page, 7.4 Settings, Throttle frequency, To achieve the fastest governor reaction it is necessary to set the highest possible frequency. For ESC it could be only 60Hz, but mostly all can work even with 200Hz. If you are unsure, please contact manufacturer of the ESC

With CC ESC should I leave it at 60Hz or increase to 200 Hz? I do not know where to find this value in CC ESC specs sheet.

2. On the radio, the posted TH and PIT settings are what I use for hovering practice without governor feature. Do I need to change them to different parameters when governor activated? If yes, please give me some parameters.

3. Can I activate or deactivate governor feature from the radio with a switch? If yes, please guide me with the setup.

You need to use Flat Throttle curves above 50% in the transmitter for the Spirit Gov to be enabled below 50% it will be disabled. So a throttle curve will all values at 90% will give you a head speed of approximately 2700 RPM.

Max HS * thottle curve % = Gov HS.

3000 * .9 = 2700

With the use of banks you can have configs with and without Gov, but why. Setup a few different head speeds via throttle curves and flight modes and go from there.

You should use 60Hz, higher values are not recommended for CC ESCs.

For each flight mode it is necessary to use a flat throttle curve. But you can use more flight modes and use a different throttle curve. But it is very important so they are flat. TC has same percentage for all 5 points.

For you as beginner this change will mean you will have to control the throttle differently. You have to learn how to engage Throttle Hold quickly too (in case of a problem).
So it is better to use a lower RPM first.

On the other hand with a flat throttle curve flight performance will be much better and helicopter can make acrobatics too.

Dear drparker 151 and Mr.Thomas,

Thank you very much for the for the replies. I shall leave the ESC frequency as 60Hz in Spirit program. Since you have not made any comment on CC ESC setup I guess those are correct too.

Regarding the TC RPMs, I have seen on the Align website that max RPM for 450L to be 3200 and I shall take that value as basis. Could I use the 3 position Idle up switch and program 2 sets of flat curves as below:

I haven't try it yet and tomorrow I may be able to bench test this. Will there be a sudden RPM changing issue when I change from NOR to IDL_1 to IDL_2 ? Should I need any changes to the PIT curves too? At the moment the PIT curve is identical on all 3 sets (NOR, IDL_1 and IDL_2)

I would leave pitch curves the same across all flight modes. That a way a change in flight mode does not cause a drastic change in pitch as well.

If normal is the first curve you show, how much of change would depend on where your throttle stick is at the time of the change.

I'd suggest you use a flat curve in Normal as well. When using a flat curve, then the stick just controls pitch and throttle does not change. I find easier to learn new thing when all I have to worry about is the pitch and not if the change in response is because of pitch change, throttle change or both. Conversely, when I change flight modes with flat curves I know the changes in behavior are purely due to throttle changes.

Without a gov being active in normal, the head speed at a given position will change throughout the flight as the battery voltage drops. So the same input done at the beginning and then again at end of flight will get a different response from the heli. This makes it harder to set muscle memory.

I say use all flat throttle curves across the board. Training your brain and muscle memory with a consistent configuration.
